Background
Cawthron Institute was established in 1921 following a large bequest from Thomas Cawthron, a local businessman and philanthropist. His vision was that science could contribute to the growth of a young New Zealand, and that vision still underpins the Institute’s activities today.
As New Zealand’s largest independent science organisation, Cawthron supports the growth of primary industries and the protection of the marine and freshwater environments. Based in Nelson, Cawthron focuses on growing and ensuring the safety of the seafood sector, developing bioactive resources and improving the health of freshwater ecosystems and oceans.
Since Cawthron’s establishment 100 years ago, it has focused on research that contributes to the economic growth of New Zealand and the preservation of a special environment. Cawthron’s scientists have been able to identify emerging areas of research that support the growth of a sustainable and prosperous New Zealand.
Cawthron is committed to investing in science-based community initiatives, projects and education activities in Te Tau Ihu. The scholarship programme is a key part of outreach and education efforts, designed to inspire the next generation of scientists by sharing our research.
